Anyone in the Puget Sound bioregion can borrow a book, video, CD or tape from the library. We would like the item returned within 3 weeks. We will call and remind you. The sooner the item is returned the better so the most people can access the material.

To develop a financial base for our library and to grow our collection, we ask that people consider becoming a supporter of our library. Membership is earned by contributing an appropriate item, volunteering at least 5 hours for the library, or contributing $15 (see further details below). Membership is valid for one year.  Supporters of our library may check out any two items for 3 weeks without deposit or late fees.

For folks who want to borrow books without becoming a supporter of the library, we will ask for a $5 deposit on each item. Upon return of the item, we will refund $4.50. The $0.50 is collected to offset the normal wear and tear on the books, and help offset our small, but real, overhead. An overdue charge of $0.10 per day will begin to accrue after a two day grace period. The overdue fine will not exceed the replacement cost of the item.

What is an appropriate item to contribute?

An item is appropriate to contribute if it meets one of the following two criteria:

    1. We want books and videos that have changed your life (minutely or largely) toward a path that is more careful and protective of biodiversity and cultural diversity on Earth. We want to have the “key resources” and all the really great and useful books so that our library makes a strong favorable impression. If you'd like to contribute an item, please check to see if we already have a copy of the item you wish to contribute before you go out and acquire a copy.

    2. We have compiled a “wish list” of books (and videos, CDs, etc.) that we would like for our library. Please consider checking with the used book stores in Bellingham and Village Books before buying the book from nonlocal corporations like Barnes and Nobles and Amazon. Contributing to a strong local economy is one step we can all take to break the stranglehold corporatism has on us all. Another recommended place to find used books is at www.half.com.

What kind of volunteering can I do for our library?

Well, heck! We need all kinds of help. Most of all, we need volunteers to be at the library for its hours of operation to help folks who drop by to join, borrow books, return books and such. We need help advertising the library via flyers, tabling, and leafleting to increase its use. We need help finding grants for the library. And there is more, but that’s good for starters.
